Community Arts

The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation is committed to expanding public art in our community. Our goal is to expand public art projects and opportunities for artists to increase art visibility and public access to art. Public art has the potential to create community identity and a sense of place that are particularly important for determining where people want to live. Public art installations bring people together, making art accessible to everyone and inspiring engagement and a sense of belonging to a community.  It forms points of pride and interest for visitors and impacts the beauty and overall feel of a city.

Grants from the GMCF Community Art and Humanities Committee support projects intended to bring humanities to life for general audiences through public programming. Humanities is a broad subject that includes learning about, thinking about, describing, and discussing what it means to be human, connecting humans and generating insights that cultivate a thriving community. Formats include, but are not limited to, interpretive exhibitions, community conversations, town halls, panel discussion, presentations, book discussions and films. The experience or event must be accompanied by some form of facilitated learning to give the audience something to think about in addition to something to learn.

Please check out our current and past projects and initiatives, and apply for grant funding for public art or humanites projects that will have an impact on the Greater Manhattan area.
