Exploring Your Giving Options

Posted Tuesday February 11, 2025

As you consider your charitable giving this year, it often can leave you wondering what the best way is to contribute to your favorite causes. Sure, writing a check is quick and easy; however, when you stop to consider all your options, it can get a bit overwhelming. Ever feel like too many choices just make things harder? That’s what we call the "paradox of choice"—having so many options that it makes you a bit anxious and unsure.

Don’t worry, we’re here to help make things easier. Our GMCF team is ready to guide you through the various assets that can significantly benefit your donor-advised fund or other types of funds, helping you maximize both your philanthropic impact and tax planning benefits. Here are some options you may want to consider:

  • Stocks: Does the idea of gifting appreciated stock to avoid capital gains tax appeal to you? It certainly offers significant advantages.
  • Business interests: Own a business? Think about setting up your funds for the future as you plan your sale or succession.
  • Real estate: Whether it’s farmland or a building downtown, this could reduce your tax load and make a big impact a cause you care about.
  • Retirement plans: If you’re over 70 ½, you might consider making a gift directly from your IRA.
  • Life insurance: How about naming your fund as a beneficiary or even transferring a policy? It's an easy way to keep supporting the causes you care about and build a lasting charitable legacy.
  • Other assets: Oil, gas, or even collectibles—yes, they can transfer cash to your fund.

GMCF is here to cut through the clutter and find the best fit for your goals, helping you navigate through the maze of options smoothly. Let's make sure you feel good about your charitable giving plans without missing out on any great opportunities.

And just a heads up, this newsletter is for your general information. It's not the same as professional advice. To see how these ideas fit your specific situation, we're here to collaborate with your tax or legal advisor. Let’s start a conversation!
